As a past CTO and VP of Engineering and someone who has used AI every day in many ways for several years now, I have found most do not understand its limitations or its most powerful features either. The old Wisdom Pyramid matters more now
I created a Wisdom Pyramid for The CEO Boot Camp more than two decades ago: data becomes information; information becomes knowledge; repeated consequences create experience; and experience, reflection, and judgment can become wisdom.
Generative AI is extraordinary in the lower and middle layers. It can ingest documents, organize facts, compare options, connect ideas, detect patterns, and draft a synthesis at a speed no human can match. That is not a small achievement. It is a force multiplier.
The danger begins when fluency at the knowledge layer is mistaken for authority at the wisdom layer. The answer sounds seasoned. The system has never lived through the consequences.
Experience cannot be downloaded
An experienced operator has absorbed thousands of small signals: the tone in a customer’s voice, the employee who agrees too quickly, the cash warning hidden behind a growing revenue number, the investor who is interested but not committed, the product delay that will trigger three other failures. Much of that pattern recognition is difficult to put into a prompt because the executive may not be consciously aware of using it.
The architecture of AirTight Management’s six systems came to me on a flight from Boston to Newport Beach. I suddenly saw that almost every client problem I had solved over the previous five years could be traced to the absence of one of six management systems. The insight arrived in a moment. The raw material took years of client work, mistakes, observation, and reflection to accumulate.
The Data-or-Judgment Test
Before delegating a decision to AI, classify the work. The closer it is to data, comparison, classification, summarization, and drafting, the more aggressively you can use the machine. The closer it is to people, culture, strategy, capital, reputation, values, and irreversible risk, the more the model should serve as a research and input tool, but it should make no decisions.
ADVANCED MOVE – COPY/PASTE PROMPT Separate this decision into two columns. Column A: questions that can be improved primarily by data, research, calculation, comparison, or pattern analysis. Column B: questions that require lived experience, values, emotional intelligence, accountability, or knowledge not contained in the sources. Explain what a CEO must personally judge before acting. |
This is the operating model I use all day: let AI do the reading, sorting, comparison, and first draft. Make it show the gaps. Then bring human experience to the consequences and tradeoffs. Add the experience, soul, and creativity that come only from years of practice. AI is not there yet.

Become an AI-enhanced executive
The goal is not to prove that humans are smarter than machines or that machines are smarter than humans. The goal is to combine very different strengths. AI expands the number of facts, options, and challenges an executive can consider. Experience determines what deserves weight.
AI can be brilliant at data and still lack the experience to recognize when its recommendation is absurd.
Treat the LLM like a brilliant, occasionally drunk intern: give it important work, demand evidence, review the output, and never confuse confidence with accountability. That is how you become a superhuman, AI-enhanced executive without surrendering the part of the job that only an executive can do.
